Women’s Basketball beats Texas No. 19/5 to end Battle4Atlantis ` Texas

PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS — The Rutgers women’s basketball team (3-4) held it close in the first half but fell 82-44 to No. 19/5 Texas in the final round of Battle4Atlantis on Monday night.

Freshman Kaylene Smikle led points for the Scarlet Knights with nine points while Chyan Cornwell led the team with eight rebounds.

How it happened

  • Rutgers came on the board first with an early layup of Kassondra Brown’s second chance in her first start for RU. Texas followed shortly after with 2:2.
  • Erica Lafayette conceded a driving layup to give the Scarlet Knights a 4-2 lead. The Longhorns responded to tie the score once more, 4-all.
  • Both teams struggled to find the basket midway through the third until Texas conceded two free throws. By the three-minute mark, the Scarlet Knights forced the Longhorns into three turnovers in less than four minutes.
  • Kai Carter and Awa Sidibe added points to keep the score at 13-9.
  • Texas came on a quick five points in the second quarter to take an 18-9 lead and force a timeout from Rutgers. Opponents continued their run with another six points before Smikle hit their first three of the game to end the stretch.
  • The Longhorns stayed strong through the middle of the quarter, scoring on two possessions to extend their lead to 28-12.
  • Smikle added a jumper followed by a shot at the line from Chyna Cornwell to reduce the deficit, 28-15.
  • Texas didn’t sit still, however, recording a free throw of their own before Brown secured her first three of the season to narrow the difference to 13.
  • Antonia Bates added a bucket just before the end of the first half but Texas stayed ahead 32-20.
  • Lafayette opened with a jumper in the third goal, but Texas followed with five points to maintain their lead, 37-22.
  • The two teams traded baskets until RU stringed together a 6-0 sprint to take the competition to 10 points. At the 4:43 p.m. media stop, the teams remained tight, 42-32.
  • With just two minutes left, Texas went out 4-of-4 to reclaim a comfortable 49-33 lead.
  • Both teams ended the third with shots from the charity strip for a 55-39 result.
  • Carter and Sidibe found the basket early in the fourth for RU, but Texas stayed on top with a 12-2 run and grabbed the 26-point lead.
  • The Longhorns went on with a great fourth quarter and took home the 82-44 win.

  • Brown started her first game for the Scarlet Knights against Texas. She had 29 starts in her previous career.
  • Cornwell finished the tournament in third place with nine offensive rebounds, while Sidibe finished third with 15 defensive boards.
