EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — Marcus Carr had 17 points and four assists as fourth-ranked Texas beat northern Arizona 73-48 Monday night in the first game the Longhorns played in the Rio Grande Valley in far south Texas.

Carr had 10 points as the Longhorns (4-0) scored 17 straight points to extend their first-half lead to 41-11. Dylan Disu had an alley-oop dunk on a Tyrese Hunter pass to start that five-minute stretch before Carr scored eight straight goals, with two three-pointers and a layup. He capped the run with another layup.

Texas played over then-No. 2 Gonzaga for the first time since their 93-74 dismantling at home last Wednesday. The Longhorns have moved up seven spots in the new AP Top 25 earlier Monday while the Bulldogs fell four places to sixth.

Xavier Fuller had 15 points for Northern Arizona (2-4), who had more turnovers (21) than field goals made (17).

Arterio Morris added 11 points for the Longhorns, who shot 50% (28 of 56). Hunter and Disu each had 10 points while Timmy Allen had 10 rebounds.

The game was played at the home arena of the NBA G League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers, which is about 300 miles south of the Longhorns’ Austin campus and not far from the US-Mexico border.

It was part of the Leon Black Classic honoring the former Longhorns player and coach, who passed away last year at the age of 89.

BIG PICTURE

Northern Arizona: The Big Sky Conference Lumberjacks led only once when Fuller hit a floater on the first shot of the game. That lead lasted 18 seconds before Texas scored eight straight points.

Texas: Carr had 14 of his points at halftime as Texas led 50-22 and had more points from turnovers (24) than the Lumberjacks had. The Longhorns made 14 of their first 18 shots and shot 65.6% at break (21 of 32), including 6 of 12 on 3-pointers.

NEXT

Northern Arizona plays hometown UT Rio Grande Valley again Tuesday in Edinburgh, who defeated western Illinois 78-77 after Ahren Freeman hit a layup in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader.

Texas is hosting UT Rio Grande Valley on the Austin campus on Saturday, but that game will not be played at the new Moody Center. It will be at Gregory High School, where the Longhorns played home games until 1977, and their home when Black was head coach from 1967-1976.
