in ranking

The Oklahoma state football team earns votes in the AP Top 25 but is not ranked in either the AP poll or the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. OSU has now appeared in the AP Top 25 in 23 of the last 25 AP polls. Including 2022, OSU has at some point made the AP poll top 10 in 11 of the last 15 seasons and has seen a top 15 finish in the AP poll in 13 of those 15 seasons. With OSU’s addition to the CFP rankings earlier this season, the Cowboys have also been part of the CFP rankings for seven of the last eight years. West Virginia is not ranked.

The series

Saturday’s game is the 14th meeting between Oklahoma State and West Virginia in a series that began in 1928. The 2022 season is also the 11th consecutive year that the teams have met. The Cowboys own a 9-4 all-time advantage in the series, including a 4-2 lead at Stillwater. OSU has beaten the Mountaineers seven times in a row and has won each of the last three games played in Stillwater. A win on Saturday would extend the longest winning streak for either team in the series. Mike Gundy is 8-2 in his career against West Virginia, while WVU’s Neal Brown is 0-3 against OSU.

State of Oklahoma from afar

Oklahoma State is 7-4 this year and has extended its school-record streak of bowl eligibility and winning seasons to a 17th straight year. OSU started the season with a 5-0 record and ranked No. 7 in the AP poll, but a double overtime loss at still-undefeated TCU gave the Cowboys their first setback of the year. They rebounded with a come-from-behind win over then-No. 20 Texas but lost two straight games away before beating Iowa State at home and then losing last week’s game in Oklahoma. Several players in key starting roles have missed games through injury or played less than 100 percent this season, which has been a big factor in the dip on the road. The list of players who missed game time this season includes quarterback Spencer Sandersback race Dominic Richardsonwide receivers Braydon Johnson and Jayden Bray, offensive linemen Preston Wilson, Hunter Woodard, ColeBirmingham, Jason Brooks Jr.and Jo Michalskicollateral SeanMichael Flanagan, Thomas Harpers and Jason Taylor IIdefender Rock Martin, Tyler Lacy, Track Ford and Brendon Eversgambler Tom Hutton and cowboy back Blaine Green. All have started multiple games for Oklahoma State. Even with more than their fair share of injuries, the Cowboys assembled a team that ranked 16th in passing offense on the FBS, 4th in third down defense, 15th in tackles for loss, and perhaps most impressively on 1st place. 2 in the fewest penalties. The standouts at each stage of the game were Sanders on offense, who leads the Big 12 on overall offense and is second on points, Taylor on defense, who is a semifinalist for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award and is ranked 3rd in the FBS Solo tackles per game and kicker Tanner Brown on special teams, who is one of only three FBS kickers to have attempted 20 field goals and scored at least 95% of them.

A win at Oklahoma State would…

• Improve school’s home winning streak to 15 games.
• Mark the second time in school history that Oklahoma State has had a perfect home record in consecutive seasons. The first came when Oklahoma A&M won 3-0 at home in 1917 and 1918.
• Set a school record for most home wins in a season at seven. OSU set the record with seven home wins last season and won at least six home games in the previous ten seasons.
• For the 15th time in school history and the seventh time since 1940 (1940; 1945; 1957; 1984; 2011; 2021; 2022), OSU ended the season with a perfect home record.
• Finish in the top four of the Big 12 rankings for the fourth consecutive year and 10th time in 12 years without divisions. Those numbers would stay the same if a win combined with a loss in Texas put the Cowboys in the top three.
• Make it 8-4 or better for the fourth straight season and 12th in the Mike Gundy Epoch.
• Winning nine of their last 10 and 22 of their last 26 games after losing.
• Won 10 of the last 14 conference regular-season games.
• Eight straight wins against the Mountaineers and four straight wins at Stillwater.
• Make the Cowboys 10-4 all-time against West Virginia and 5-2 against WVU in Stillwater.
• To enhance Mike Gundy‘s career record against West Virginia at 9-2.
• To enhance Mike Gundy‘s record in Big 12 games at 96-60.
• To enhance Mike GundyRecord in home games at 90-27.
• 22-6 in the last 28 games spanning the 2020 season.
• 87-19 in their last 106 games against opponents outside of the AP Top 25, dating back to 2010.
