TAMPA (11/21/2022) – Outstanding Women’s Basketball Players from the University of South Florida Elena Tsineke and Karl Brito were recognized as this week’s honorees by the American Athletic Conference, the league announced Monday. Tsineke was named AAC Player of the Week while Brito received her second straight Freshman of the Week award. It marks the second straight win in the weekly awards for the Bulls Dulcy Fankam Menjiadeu He was named player of the week last week and joined Brito.
The tandem helped South Florida to a 2-0 record last week with a 67-59 home win over Alabama on Nov. 16 and a 66-59 win at TCU on Nov. 20 at the Maggie Dixon Classic. The Bulls started 5-0 for the first time since the 2017/18 season.
Tsineke, a guard, averaged 21.5 points per game over the two games, with 45.5 percent (15 of 33) shooting from the field and 83.3 percent (10 of 12) from the free-throw line. She also averaged 3.5 assists per match.
The Greek native had a season-high 22 points, four assists and two steals against Alabama with 52.9 percent (9 of 17) shots from the field, followed by a 21-point performance at TCU.
Brito averaged 7.5 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per contest over the two games.
The rookie wing from Spain grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive boards, against Alabama. Brito matched that career mark in the next game at TCU and also hit her first career double-double with 11 points in 5-on-9 shooting from the field (55.6 percent).
South Florida returns to the Yuengling Center Tuesday night when it hosts New Hampshire at 7 p.m

South Florida recorded its 10thth 20-win season during the 2021-22 season while playing in his sixth American Athletic Conference championship game in his nine years in the conference. Reached the cops her highest national finish of the season when she checked in 13th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll on November 30, and advanced to her seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the past nine years.
USF has made 17 postseason tournament appearances and has had eight NCAA tournament berths as a head coach Jose Fernandez22 seasons. Fernandez, the most successful coach of all time in program history, has led USF to 10 seasons with 20 wins, two WNIT Final Four appearances and the 2009 WNIT Championship, and won over 400 career games. Fernandez was named a finalist for the WBCA and a semi-finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Awards. He was also named the 2021 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year at the end of the 2020-21 season.
In 2021-22, the Bulls had three players recognized for impressive playing times by The American, including Elena Tsineke (All-Conference First Team), Bethy Mununga (All-Conference Second Team) and Dulcy Fankam Menjiadeu (All-Conference Second Team).
In addition, Tsineke and Mununga were named to the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team.
