Before my next column is published, Thanksgiving Day will have come and gone. The Husker-Iowa football game will have been played and AD Trev Alberts will have announced his election as Husker’s new head football coach.
Otherwise there is not much to write…
My feeling is that Trev will call a press conference for Sunday, either late morning or early afternoon. Before the formal announcement, the leaks will likely start the night before. The phones are busy with calls and text messages. Social media will be in meltdown mode.
Husker fans will no doubt hear or see a live broadcast of Albert’s announcement. The newcomer is greeted with a huge round of applause. He will say how proud, honored and excited he is to be the next Husker leader. He will thank his wife and children. He will thank Trev Alberts for giving him the chance to fulfill his dream of being the new kid in Nebraska.
He will thank the Husker fans for their unwavering dedication to the program – despite 6 straight lost seasons. He will also pledge to do everything in his power to restore the glory that was once the Husker football program.
Trev and the new trainer will answer a few questions. What made Trev think the new guy was THE guy for Nebraska? When did Trev make the offer? Why is the new guy coming to Nebraska and what makes him (Alberts) think he (NG) can be successful in Lincoln? Who were the other candidates? (Trev will say there were many great candidates.)
How many players does the New Guy think Nebraska will lose their current roster, and how many of the 2023 recruits will remain committed to Nebraska? Has the new one gathered his staff? Who are you? Will Mickey Joseph stay? Are there any other current wizards you’d like to keep?
Then the presser is suddenly over.

Husker fans will either embrace the new setting or they won’t. There may be some who think Alberts should have chosen someone else. The debate won’t stop until the new coaching staff can prove they’re capable of making the Huskers win more football games than they lose (however long that takes).
The transfer portal will begin on December 5th and early registration for Recruitment Class ’23 will be on December 21st.
After December it’s time for winter conditioning. Recruitment. The Spring Game. Another transfer portal period in May. summer training. Fall camp and start of season 23.
Oops! It will be numbing for the newbie.
Can Husker fans wait another four or five years while the newcomer assembles his team? I do not think so.
In the meantime, Husker fans can only hope the new one is the one.
